Instructor and Learner Relationship FI.I.A.K1b
Personality & Teaching: What Separates Good CFIs from Great Ones
Anyone can deliver information. Great instructors adjust their delivery based on who's receiving it. When teaching style matches learning style, learning accelerates.
Learning Styles
Everyone has a natural learning style (Chapter 2, AIH). Some learners need hands-on action, others need structure and detail.
Example: An "Artisan" learner thrives on dynamic, scenario-based training. Feed them variety and practical challenges, not just rote procedures.
Your Teaching Style
You have preferences too. A structured, methodical instructor teaching a variety-seeking student? That's a recipe for frustration - unless you adapt.
Example: In the AIH, Derek recognized his step-by-step style wasn't clicking with Jason, who needed excitement. Derek created an engaging flight scenario instead of drilling procedures. Result? Jason engaged.
Your Teaching Style + Their Learning Style

Takeaway: Your job as a CFI isn't to change the student - it's to adapt your delivery.
Example: Derek adjusted his teaching approach by creating a flight scenario that catered to Jason's need for excitement and variation, aligning the lesson with Jason's learning style.
How to Adapt - The 3-Step Framework
Observe: Watch for signs of engagement or frustration
Recognize: Identify the mismatch
Accomodate: Adjust YOUR approach (not the student’s style)
The AIH tells us that you can't completely change your teaching style, but you can definitely flex it. Use visual aids for visual learners. Add scenarios for action-oriented students. Build in discussion for reflective thinkers. The more tools in your kit, the more students you'll reach.
Key Insight

Checkride Q&A
DPE Might Ask
"How does understanding personality types help you as an instructor?"
Strong Answer
"It lets me meet students where they are. If I have an 'Idealist' learner, I'll incorporate more discussion and reflection. An 'Artisan' gets hands-on scenarios. Adapting to their natural style improves retention and application - they learn faster when I teach to their strengths."
Weak Answer
"I teach everyone how I like to be taught."
Why this fails
Ignores individual differences - big red flag.
