The restructuring we've been talking about is here! Everything now lives on backseatpilot.app — schedule, join links, and recordings all in one place.
Here's how each prep session runs:
- Foundational Teaching Concept (applies to all lessons)
- Marcus's approach to the ACS Task — he'll teach an element or two for reference
- Volunteer Teaching — practice with feedback from Marcus & peers
- Open time for questions, review, study structure, or whatever YOU need
Each week has its own theme:
- Week 1: FOI
- Week 2: Ground Lesson
- Week 3: Flight Lesson
- Week 4: Ad-hoc Lesson
Plus one Mock Checkride class each week, where Marcus reviews topics the way a DPE would.
- III.B. Airworthiness Requirements — Added/updated the registration certificate renewal every 7 years
- III.B. Airworthiness Requirements — Added/updated the registration certificate renewal every 7 years
- II.E. Flight Controls & Systems — Fixed the multi-engine aircraft specific lessons & links

- VIII.D. Circling Approach — Updated to reflect the removal of the circling icon
- Audio uploaded for the LISTEN phase of all I.C. lessons
- Site updates and improvements
- More FOI Study Tool audio (I.D. is next)
- Back to the PPL syllabus!
- Consistent updates and improvements to the lessons & slides
A structured, day-by-day approach to your CFI lesson prep — designed to guide you all the way through your checkride.
- A clear path through your CFI lesson prep
- Weekends off built in
- Extra days for the larger lessons so you're not rushed
- Real structure and guidance instead of guessing what to study next
Less than 90 days until your checkride? No problem — cover topics on the weekends and/or combine days to fit your timeline.
Down the road, this will integrate into the syllabus to tie your studying, teaching practice, AND flying together — and eventually live in backseatpilot.app for a personalized study plan built around YOUR checkride date.
We've moved to backseatpilot.app as we build it into a more holistic CFI prep hub. And as promised last month — the new Class Pass section is here! Class Pass members can now:
- Access your personal Zoom join links
- View the weekly schedule and a calendar of upcoming classes
- Watch past recordings anytime
- Subscribe to calendar updates (Google, Apple, Outlook, and more) so you never miss a change
Everything in one place, always up to date.

- CFI — III.B. Airworthiness Requirements: Added "Key Nuances" on 100-hour inspection requirements
The updated airworthiness content references some important FAA Letters of Interpretation that clarify when the 100-hour inspection is actually required. I've put together two blog posts to help clarify these nuances — these aren't just academic, they're real scenarios.
- Start here: The 100-Hour Inspection Rule Explained — Covers the foundational Fly By Knight LOI
- Then read: Who Provides the Aircraft? It Matters More Than You Think — Dives deeper into the Colvin and Pipitone letters
We're restructuring the Class Pass to combine the best parts of the CFI Prep Course with what's working in the current format. Still $95/month. We'll keep you posted as these changes roll out.

I'm putting together a structured Private Pilot ground school — an entirely new product aimed at Flight Schools and Independent CFIs who want formal training materials. Bonus: as we format and structure these PPL lessons, it's leading to improvements in the CFI content too. That's one of the reasons you're seeing reorganizations and new content added to CFI lessons in this month's update.
- Complete structured syllabi
- Will expand to additional ratings over time
- Still in development but making solid progress
- Improvements to the FOI Study Tool and launching it as a standalone product

- Digital study tools beta testing and expansion (I have so many ideas)

This month's updates are just for the Word/PowerPoint and PDF formats. Mac versions (Pages/Keynote) coming in the next update - my apologies, things got very busy launching our new Class Pass and finishing the FOI tool.
- Section I Lessons — All FOI lessons are now completely restructured — Cleaner logical progression, concepts tied together, building toward practical application
- This new structure works seamlessly with our new FOI training tool (see below!)
- All Lessons — Link and formatting updates throughout
- Various Lessons — Links cleaned up and typos fixed
The FOIs are where I see most CFI candidates struggle - and it makes sense. These concepts are completely new, but they're also the foundation of your Instructor checkride. So we're building something to fix that. And it's just the start.
- Learn — Study concepts alongside your BSP lessons (focused on application)
- Listen — Audio versions of lessons
- Quiz — Test your knowledge with practice questions and explanations
- Teach — Practice teaching concepts with immediate AI feedback
- Oral — Practice DPE oral questions with immediate AI feedback
The restructured FOI content you just downloaded? It's designed to work hand-in-hand with this tool.
And here's the vision: This same approach (and A LOT more) will eventually expand to all ACS tasks. FOI is the proving ground. Once we dial this in, we'll have this level of interactive training for everything from stalls to systems to checkride prep.
We're finalizing logins now, then I'll be looking for more FOI trial users. I'll keep you posted.
- Mac FOI content updates (Pages/Keynote)
- FOI Tool launch and expansion
- New website is moving along
- Continued growth of Class Pass and CFI Prep Course offerings

Explore our full library of instructor training materials:

- PPL Ground School development continues
- New website is VERY close to launch
- CFI Class Pass improvements rolling out

- All Student Trackers cleaned up — Removed default dates for each lesson and restructured date entry
The FOI Study Tool continues to evolve. Not its own product yet (only accessible as part of 'TWS Pro' at the moment), but it's getting close! Stay tuned.

- Once I finish the FOI work, I'll start reformatting the rest of the lessons
- Digital study tools beta testing and expansion (I have so many ideas)
- New website is getting closer
- So much has changed over the last 6 months with the Class Pass and new digital tools and I'm really excited to see where it goes over the next few months!

Only our reference cards are shipped. Everything else (lessons, PowerPoints, ACS Reviews, syllabi, etc.) is only delivered digitally.

Yep! You're free to print the content. We recommend finding a commercial printer (FedEx Office, Kinkos, etc.) to keep the costs down. The lesson plans and other content is quite lengthy.

While the lessons were originally developed around the Diamond aircraft, over the years they have been updated to be more generic and useful to everyone. The limited aircraft specific information remaining has been annotated with a highlighted yellow asterisk for easy recognition and updates.
